Why I Teach Art Classes
My Artistic Roots
People often ask me why I teach art classes. For those who know me, it’s clear that teaching art is truly where I belong. Art runs deep in my family; both sides of my family tree are filled with artists, so creativity is simply part of my DNA. I’ve been passionate about art from a young age. In kindergarten, my teacher noticed something special in my paintings—they could actually tell what I was painting, unlike the other kids’ work. My parents were encouraged to nurture my talent, and one of my paintings was even displayed at the local show that year.
Early Art Education
My mum found a lovely older French artist who taught art classes from her home. That experience shaped my childhood. I spent about ten years learning from her, and it was a wonderful era of my life. There was a core group of us kids who stayed together for many years, forming friendships as we developed our painting skills. We participated in local and Brisbane exhibitions, which were exciting opportunities. Art classes became a highlight of my week, a time I looked forward to. I loved spending time with my teacher and friends, witnessing my skills grow, and having those achievements celebrated—once, I even made the front page of the local paper. These years left a lasting, positive impression on my childhood and adolescence.
From Classroom to Creative Studio
As an adult, I became a primary school teacher, a career filled with joy and reward. Over a couple of decades, I built many fond memories with students, families, and colleagues, many of whom remain part of my life today.
A New Adventure
Later, after raising a family and a decade of homeschooling, I entered a new chapter as my sons finished their schooling. Teaching art classes began unexpectedly—I filled in for a friend, leading Creative Art Classes for adults at The Banyans, a high-end wellness centre. This opportunity allowed me to combine my teaching skills with my artistic abilities, and I witnessed firsthand how art can support people’s wellness and healing. Seeing participants relax, grow in self-confidence, and leave with smiles on their faces gave me immense satisfaction. It was difficult to say who benefitted more—the houseguests or me. That experience rekindled a spark in me. I wanted to give others the same gifts I’d received as a child and to share the well-being benefits of art with people of all ages. That inspiration led me to start my own art business.
The Joy of Art
As my sons say, art is my happy place. It has brought me constant joy, served as therapy in stressful times, and provided a way to connect with others. I believe that teaching art is how I can share my skills and God-given abilities, offering others a space to learn and develop, relax, connect, and build confidence.
